Description

In Heart of the Stone, Rosa Chávez celebrates a Maya spirituality that recognizes all things—stones included—as part of the web of life. At the center of the collection is tijax, the poet's nawal represented by obsidian, the volcanic stone. Her verses cut through grief and fear to address colonization, injustices, and environmental abuse, while carving out a space for tenderness and deep healing.

Originally written in Spanish and translated into Maya K'iche' by Wel Raxulew, this stunning trilingual edition brings the poems into English for the first time in Gabriela Ramirez-Chavez's translation. The volume is framed by an introduction from Ramirez-Chavez, photography by Carlos Bernardo Euler Coy, and illustrations by Erick Boror.

Rosa Chávez is a poet from the Maya K'iche' and Kaqchikel communities in Iximulew (Guatemala), whose creative practice also spans music, film, and performance. She is the author of six books of poetry, including Casa solitaria (2005), Ri u'k'u'x ri ab'aj / El corazón de la piedra (2010), Espíritu del camino / Rajawal ri b'e (2024), and Tijax (2025). In 2024, she received the Prince Claus Impact Award from the Netherlands for her poetry and activism. She lives in Guatemala City.

Gabriela Ramirez-Chavez is a Seattle-based poet and translator born to Guatemalan immigrants. Her poetry is featured in literary journals and anthologies, including The Wandering Song: Central American Writing in the United States. Her translations focus on Indigenous literatures of Abiayala, especially from Mesoamerica. She is co-translator of Tsunami: Women's Voices in Mexico.

Wel Raxulew is a Maya Kʼicheʼ linguist, educator, and singer-songwriter from Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán, Guatemala. The former President of the Academy of Maya Languages of Guatemala, his translations into K'iche' include a poetry collection by Rosa Chávez, Ri uk'u'x ri ab'aj / El corazón de la piedra (2010).
