Michigan Publishing is proud to partner with the Center for International Reproductive Health Training (CIRHT) to publish Integrating Family Planning into Medical Education: A Case Study of St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC), Addis Ababa.
This case study chronicles the integration of pre-service training in contraception and comprehensive abortion care into the medical school and OBGYN residency training program at SPHMMC. It showcases the key elements that were crucial in the successful implementation of the SPHMMC program, which has now become mainstream and has been emulated in eight other medical schools in Ethiopia through CIRHT.
Since its implementation in 2012, a total of 216 medical students have been trained, and graduates have gone on to become skilled providers of Family Planning/Comprehensive Abortion Care services, champions for women’s health, and leaders and mentors across the country.
In an effort to expand the work of U-M, CIRHT, and SPHMMC beyond Ethiopia to academic medical centers in the Global South and to the reproductive health community at large, this case study is now online and open access.
