This fall we’re continuing our popular “Publish Not Perish” series of workshops for graduate students who want to learn more about publishing, copyright, open access, and more. Thanks to feedback from past attendees, we’ve added discipline-specific introductory sessions for the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Use the links below to register. The series will continue next semester with additional workshops and a faculty panel on publishing.

Open Access Essentials
Monday, 10/21, 10:00 am-11:00 am
Open educational resources, open data, MOOCs and more. What does Open Access mean for academics and how does copyright relate? We’ll talk about sharing works and protecting rights, what it means for reusing other people’s work, and using Creative Commons licenses to encourage the reuse of your own work.

Introduction to Publishing in the Humanities
Thursday, 10/24, 3:00 pm-4:00 pm
While each discipline is unique, publishing in the humanities does have a common set of conventions and expectations. Designed for graduate students in any area of the humanities, this workshop will provide an overview of the publishing process for both books and journal articles, including how to select publication venues, what to expect as an author, and time for Q&A.

Introduction to Publishing in the Sciences
Wednesday, 10/30, 3:00 pm-4:30 pm
Publishing scientific journal articles is a complex and sometimes mysterious process. Designed for graduate students in the sciences, this workshop will provide an overview of the publication process, including how to select a target journal, how to write a cover letter and respond to peer reviewers, how to handle the intellectual property and ethics issues, how to measure the impact of your work, and what to do with the data underlying your journal article.

Beyond Blogging: WordPress.com for Professional Portfolios
Friday, 11/8, 1:00 pm-3:00 pm
Going on the job market? Learn how to build a professional and eye-catching portfolio by tweaking the free blog publishing platform WordPress. We’ll cover how to choose and customize a theme; add multimedia files and organize pages; and create static content. We’ll also talk about best practices and ideas for professional portfolio content. This workshop is suitable for PC or Mac users. You don’t need to know HTML or CSS for this workshop, but a basic understanding of web publishing is helpful. This workshop will only cover the wordpress.com version of WordPress.

Introduction to Publishing in the Social Sciences
Wednesday, 11/13, 3:00 pm-4:00 pm
While each discipline is unique, publishing in the social sciences does have a common set of conventions and expectations. Designed for graduate students in any area of the social sciences, this workshop will provide an overview of the publishing process, how to select publication venues (including journals, working papers, and conference proceedings), how to respond to reviewers, and what to expect as an author.

Copyright and Your Dissertation
Tuesday, 11/19, 11:00 am-12:00 pm
Copyright for the dissertation writer is not that scary, we promise! In this workshop we’ll cover data, images, and reusing prior published articles in your dissertation. We’ll also show you how to protect your copyright as an author and how to get permissions when necessary. This session is specifically for students working on a dissertation or thesis.
