After the creation of MPublishing as a formal unit in 2009, we are now taking further steps to bring together the robust publishing units at the University of Michigan, now part of the University of Michigan Library. We have now created three cross-unit departments that bring together the vast scholarly and trade publishing experience of the University of Michigan Press with the digital publishing capabilities that were part of the former Scholarly Publishing Office. These units give MPublishing unprecedented scale and will help create a more seamless approach to the range of publications we produce. In implementing these changes, Associate University Librarian for Publishing John Wilkin notes, “The strength of our various publications is remarkable. My goal in these changes is to strengthen an already very successful and vibrant publishing operation. I am proud of the work we do in all of the areas of MPublishing, and believe that we can use this new structure to invest more deeply in areas of functional support and to build a more capable and financially viable organization.”

Publishing Technology Group:

We are consolidating technology support for the core publishing operations. Joining the Publishing Technology Group, headed by Jeremy Morse, are Melissa Baker-Young (UM Press Web Project Manager) and Jim Vanderwill (UM Press Systems Administrator). The Publishing Technology Group provides programming and technology development expertise for the entirety of MPublishing, advises on technology decisions, supports workflow and tool development, develops and refines online content delivery systems, and leads the design of mPach.

Publishing Production:

Kevin Hawkins now leads a merged Publishing Production team. This group brings together production operations across MPublishing, including the robust digital production capabilities that Kevin developed along with the Press’s copyediting unit, led by Chris Milton and the Press’s production team, led by John Grucelski. Kevin will continue to explore ways that the disparate production activities across MPublishing can be knit together as a more integrated whole, allowing us to take on increasingly influential publishing work.

MPublishing acquires a diverse range of content and publication types, including high-quality academic monographs, scholarly Open Access journals, and innovative digital projects. Aaron McCollough (formerly the English Language & Literature Librarian here at UM) will assume a leadership role for acquisitions activities across MPublishing. Aaron will have supervisory responsibility for each of the principals in MPublishing responsible for areas of acquisition.

In order to strengthen MPublishing’s journal publishing activities, we will also develop a more formal journal publishing program. Becky Welzenbach, Text Creation Partnership Project Outreach Librarian, will lead an effort to refine tools and methods, solicit new titles, and define new directions. MPublishing’s existing online journals will help provide a foundation. Becky will report to Aaron McCollough in both her TCP and journals roles.

These new units join several existing MPublishing departments, including Outreach and Strategic Development (led by Shana Kimball) and Sales and Marketing (led by Mike Kehoe), along with core administrative functions.
