Banned Books from the Espresso Book Machine

As Banned Books Week comes to a close, take a moment to consider reading a “banned classic.” A number of classic works of literature that were once banned or challenged books can be purchased from our Espresso Book Machine. The list of public domain “banned classics” includes Jack London’s The Call of the Wild (1903), Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle (1906), Kate Chopin’s The Awakening (1899), and D. H. Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers (1913) and Women in Love (1920). You can search the EBM Catalog to find and purchase these items.

NB: You do not need to be affiliated with the University of Michigan in any way in order to purchase books from the machine. However, we are not currently shipping the books, so you need to be able to pick them up in person. For non-local customers, many of our public domain titles can be purchased on Amazon.com through the Library’s separate Print on Demand (POD) service. Use “University of Michigan Library” as the publisher when searching for books on Amazon.com to find our titles.
