MPublishing works in close collaboration with scholars, and we are saddened to announce the loss of a longtime partner and advocate on April 2.
Richard W. Bailey, professor emeritus of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan, published six monographs with the University of Michigan Press during his career. He also co-created an online-only scholarly edition of an Early Modern text, A London Provisioner’s Chronicle, 1550-1563 by Henry Machyn, published jointly by the University Press and Library in 2006.
The project transcribed and modernized the “diary” of the 16th century London merchant Henry Machyn, and, under Bailey’s leadership, is published openly in electronic format in order “to turn the Chronicle into a form readily accessible to our contemporaries” (Introduction). Bailey was an early advocate of the use of computers in humanities research, attending IBM & Rand Corporation conferences in the 1960s and editing volumes on computing and literary studies in the 1970s and 1980s.
His colleagues in the Department of English Language and Literature have written a message about the life of Richard Bailey and his many accomplishments.
